Tortora adalah Guru Besar Biologi dan mantan Koordinator bidang Biologi di Bergen Community Perguruan tinggi di Paramus, New Jersey, tempat ia mengajar anatomi manusia dan fisiologi serta mikrobiologi. Dia menerima gelar sarjana di bidang biologi dari Fairleigh Dickinson University dan pada masa tuannya memperoleh gelar dalam ilmu pendidikan dari Montclair State College.
