Buku ini terdiri atas 3 bagian utama. Bagian Satu menyediakan kerangka kerja untuk mempelajari kriminologi. Bab pertama bab definisi  lapangan dan  pembahasan konsep yang paling dasar: definisi  kejahatan, daerah komponen kriminologi, sejarah kriminologi, konsep hukum pidana, dan isu-isu etis yang dihadapi di lapangan. Bab 2 metode penelitian kriminologi dan sifat, lingkup, dan pola kejahatan. Bab 3 dikhususkan untuk konsep korban, termasuk sifat korban, teori korban, dan program yang dirancang untuk membantu korban kejahatan. Bagian Kedua berisi enam bab yang mencakup Teori  kriminologi: mengapa orang berperilaku seperti yang mereka lakukan? Mengapa mereka melakukan kejahatan? Teori-teori yang mencoba untuk menjawab pertanyaan-pertanyaan ini fokus pada pilihan (Bab 4); ciri-ciri biologis dan psikologis (Bab 5); struktur sosial dan budaya (Bab 6); proses sosial dan sosialisasi (Bab 7);  Konflik Sosial (Bab 8); dan pembangunan manusia (Bab 9).
Bagian Ketiga dikhususkan untuk mengemukakan  bentuk utama dari perilaku kriminal. Bab-bab dalam bagian ini meliputi kejahatan kekerasan (Bab10); kejahatan politik dan terorisme (Bab 11);
