Buku edisi kesebelas ini mengemukakan Penyakit Schiff dari Hati dan retrospektif dari edisi sebelumnya membuktikan kemajuan luar biasa dalam pemahaman kita tentang patogenesis dan pengobatan penyakit hati. Pengobatan baru, terutama dari hepatitis virus kronis, yang mengganggu perkembangan menuju sirosis dan mengurangi risiko untuk karsinoma hepatoseluler. Satu sejarah yang akurat, pemeriksaan fisik, dan standar laboratorium kimia akan membuat diagnosis pada sebagian besar pasien dengan gangguan hepatobilier. Buku ini juga mengemukakan bahwa Proteomik dan genomik menjadi erat dengan memahami patogenesis penyakit hati, khususnya penyakit hati yang diinduksi obat. Komorbiditas dari steatohepatitis, beralkohol maupun non-alkohol, bersama dengan kecenderungan genetik termasuk daerah heterozigot untuk alpha-1 antitrypsin dan kelebihan zat besi adalah sering terlibat dalam patogenesis penyakit hati. Dengan harapan hidup meningkat dan populasi yang berusia lebih tua, penyakit jantung dan hepatitis iskemik menjadi lebih lazim. Deteksi dini karsinoma hepatoseluler ditambah dengan pemeriksaan radiologis yang lebih akurat dan pilihan terapi yang lebih baru telah menyelamatkan banyak pasien. Sebagai kemajuan dalam pencegahan berkembangnya dan pengobatan penyakit hati, terakhir bagi mereka dengan penyakit hati dikompensasi tetap melalui transplantasi hati.
Peningkatan toleransi untuk transplantasi liver adalah fokus utama penelitian dalam buku ini.
