Buku edisi kelima ini  telah mengalami perubahan. Sebagian besar adalah perubahan kecil, seperti organel sel baru, proteasome, dalam Bab 3; klarifikasi produksi sel darah dalam Bab 4, 11, dan 14;
dan penambahan kontraksi konsentrik dan eksentrik untuk Bab 7. Yang paling  luas mengalami revisi  adalah  Bab 14: Bagian pada imunitas telah ditulis ulang menggunakan kategori imunitas bawaan dan adaptif.
