Dikemukakan ada sedikit keraguan bahwa kemajuan teknologi dalam pencitraan pra operasi, seperti rekonstruksi 3-D, persiapan pra operasi dengan embolisasi vena portal dan teknik operasi menggunakan metode RF reseksi berdarah, sudah mengubah sifat operasi hati.

Bagian pertama dan kedua yang difokuskan untuk embriologi, anatomi dan fisiologi, teknik diagnostik
dalam bedah hepatobilier dan pengelolaan penyakit jinak dan ganas pada saluran empedu saat ini. Bagian ketiga, ditulis dari dokter Rumah Sakit Hammersmith. Mereka memberikan kontribusi terhadap bab yang meliputi tiga wilayah yang berbeda. Bidang pertama mencerminkan kegiatan yang unik di mana departemen HPB unggul.
