Otmar Scherzer lahir di Vöcklabruck, Austria. Ia belajar teknis matematika di Universitas Linz, Austria dan menerima Diploma dalam Matematika di 1987. Ia menerima gelar PhD dalam 1990 dan habilitasi di 1995 dari universitas yang sama.
Selama 1995 dan 1995, ia mengunjungi Texas A & M University dan University of Delaware di USA. Dari 1999-2001, ia memegang jabatan guru di Ludwig Maximilian University, Munich, dan University of Bayreuth, Jerman. Otmar kemudian bergabung dengan Universitas Innsbruck, Austria di mana ia menjabat sebagai profesor penuh "dan Terapan Komputer Berorientasi Matematika, "dari 2001 sampai pertengahan 2009. Pada pertengahan 2009, ia menerima posisi di Universitas Wina, di mana ia saat ini memimpin Computational Science Center yang diciptakan pada pengangkatannya.
